7 Reasons You Need a Burrito Right Now
Everyone loves burritos! While that may not be entirely true, chances are you'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't love burritos in at least one of their many incarnations, so it's a claim we'll stick to. Burritos are one of the most popular Mexican foods in America, and one of the most popular items on the menu at our Ormond Beach Mexican restaurant.
Chances are, you love burritos as well, or you wouldn't be reading this article, but we'll go ahead and give you a few more reasons to love these neatly wrapped foods.
They're Versatile – From crispy and fried to soft and soaked with queso or sauce, burritos start out with a dozen different textures that are almost impossible to find anywhere else. Once you get through the outer layer, whatever you have chosen, you'll be met with a wide variety of fillings and then dozens of toppings and sides ranging from smooth sauces to hot chili and enchilada sauces. In fact, there are so many ways to serve burritos that you probably haven't tried them all. For example, the Mole burrito features grilled chicken, mushrooms, and onions topped with a rich Mole (peanut, guajillo, and chocolate) sauce.
So Many Fillings - Whether you're in the mood for something healthy and vegetarian (like zucchini, squash and onions) to extravagant California style burritos stuffed with meat, pico de gallo, cheese, Spanish rice, and vegetables, burritos have your back. Some of our favorites include carne asada, the California burrito, our in-house Agave burrito, and the classic, but less well-known mole burrito.
They're More Popular in the USA than Mexico – While the exact origins of burritos are unclear, it is understood that burritos may have made their way to the USA at about the same time as the taco. The first burritos were small and typically featured a thin layer of a single ingredient such as refried beans, meat, fish, potatoes, or cheese, far from the large and arguably more delicious burritos we know today. The burrito most likely first originated in the Mexican city Ciudad Juárez, in the state of Chihuahua, where Spanish conquistadors planted wheat, making flour tortillas for burritos possible. They then made their way to the USA via Los Angeles alongside the taco trucks. By the 1970s, they were a nationwide phononemon, thanks to the advent of breakfast burritos and microwave burritos (which we don’t recommend). Today, burritos are available coast to coast in the USA, but mostly only in Chihuahua in Mexico.
Chimichangas – If you're not in the mood for a soft burrito, a smothered burrito, or a wet burrito, why not a fried burrito? Chimichangas are deep fried burritos that bring all the goodness of your favorite burrito into a crispy, crunchy treat that's hard to beat. In fact, Chimichangas are one of the most popular burritos in the United States.
They Combine Contemporary and Traditional Ingredients – Burritos are a classic mix of old and new, taking traditional cooking methods and combining them with new ingredients. From the first, the burrito was born of the meld between Spanish and Mesoamerican cuisines, taking the traditional corn tortilla and recreating it with European flour. Today that standard of blended cuisines is embraced readily and many burritos feature a mix of tastes and textures.
You Can Have Them Anytime – From breakfast burritos with egg and bacon to meat laden extravagances perfect for even the latest outing, burritos are great for every occasion. While the classic burritos served at Agave Fresh Mex and Cantina in Ormond Beach are best for lunch or dinner, there's a burrito out there to fit every time of day.
Two Words. Smothered Burritos – While some people argue that there's nothing quite like biting into a tinfoil wrapped burrito, we like to argue that the smothered burrito is on another level. Burritos should be topped with sauces, which is why we offer a full range of them, including red sauce, queso, green sauce, mole, chipotle, and Diablo.
A well-made burrito is a beautiful thing and if you're hungry it's hard to resist one. If you're hungry, drop by Agave Fresh Mex and Cantina in Ormond Beach, and we'll fix you one of the 14 classic burritos on ourmenu.
