Celebrate the Tastes of Mexico at Agave Mexican Restaurant

blog

Authentic Mexican food tastes delicious. If you have been to Agave Mexican Restaurant before, you know that every dish is prepared with fresh ingredients using traditional Mexican spices and seasoning. Here we’ll explore some of the most popular tastes of authentic Mexican dishes. You can also take a sneak peak at some of our most popular chef’s specials.

Avocado

Avocados are often touted as a super food, because they are full of vitamins and minerals and low in sugar. Avocados contain plenty of healthy fats which not only lower your cholesterol but also keep you feel full. Best of all, adding avocado to your dishes adds a unique flavor to tacos, burritos, and most importantly guacamole.

Naturally, you can eat avocado at home, too. It can be substituted for butter or oil, added as a spread to your sandwiches or pureed and mixed with pasta for a flavorful dinner. In Mexican cuisine, avocados are crucial to many different recipes. Most of the avocadoes in the United States are grown in Southern California, but you may also see them imported from Peru.

Herbs, Spices & Seasonings

Mexican dishes are uniquely seasoned to ensure that every bite is flavorful. Of course, the right combination and cooking technique makes a big difference in how your dinner tastes. Here is a list of the most common flavors you’ll find in our dishes:

  • Garlic
  • Onion
  • Chipotle powder
  • Cilantro
  • Chili powder
  • Mexican oregano
  • Cinnamon
  • Cumin
  • Cloves
  • Anise
  • Epazote

You probably already use onion, garlic, and cilantro in your recipes at home. However, cumin is immensely popular in Mexican cuisine. Its color is similar to that of cinnamon, but it has been used in historic times for its healing properties. Cumin contains a good amount of iron, too.

Mexican oregano is also not the same as the typical oregano you buy in the store. Traditional oregano comes from the Mediterranean but won’t give you the same flavor as Mexican oregano. Cilantro is often used fresh and dry as it makes great addition to fresh salsa but can also be used for dips and burritos.

Agave

Most people only think of agave nectar in relation to tequila. And while the agave plant that’s native to Mexico is instrumental in making tequila, its syrup can also be used as a sweetener. In fact, the Agave sap is a great alternative to sugar. Incidentally, there is more to making tequila than meets the eye. For one thing, making tequila is time-consuming, because you have to wait for 8 years until you can harvest the agave plant.
